There’re a lot of people out there who want to live a self-sustained, ecologically friendly lifestyle. In doing so, you provide yourself with home-grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Naturally, if you’re a kratom enthusiast, you might want to consider adding the botanical to your garden roster. But farming kratom isn’t quite so simple as that, as this Southeast Asian tree requires a number of special considerations to thrive.

If you’re curious about growing your own kratom in your home garden then here’s what you need to know.

What is a kratom plant?

Kratom plants (Mitragyna speciosa) are actually trees, occasionally growing as tall as 100 feet in height. They are native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. This tree can grow very tall in its natural habitat. In cooler climates, it has to be protected from the cold, which means it will likely have to be grown in a container. This will keep it from reaching its full height, which is probably a good thing unless you have the space for a very large tree. It can also be treated as a houseplant, spending spring and summer outdoors, and then bringing the plant inside with the onset of cooler temps in fall for overwintering.

Kratom plants are notoriously difficult to propagate. They can be started from seed or cuttings, and both have relatively low success rates. The seeds have to be very fresh, and even so, should be planted in a large group to increase the chances of getting even a single viable seedling.

So…. Can you grow your own kratom? YES, DEFINITELY!

Should you grow your own kratom? PROBABLY NOT!

If you want to try the fun, here’re a few tips for you:

  • Try to buy/find the freshest seeds possible.
  • Don’t subject the seeds or plant matter to a dry atmosphere; keep moist.
  • Plant in fertile, humus-rich soil; fertilize when nutrients need to be supplemented.
  • Don’t overwater; keep moist but not flooded.
  • Try to keep artificial light or sunlight during the germination period low.
  • Keep humidity levels as close as possible to the seed’s country of origin.

What Conditions Does Kratom Need?

What about these regions makes the area great for growing Kratom? Let’s talk a bit more about the specific growing conditions that Kratom needs to thrive so that you can get an idea of what type of climate you will need to replicate in order to get the best results possible.

These areas are hot and humid. The soil there is very fertile with a usual pH falling somewhere between 5.5 and 6.5.

Additionally, the soil should also have high levels of humus to ensure proper and sturdy growth. The soil also has to be able to retain a lot of moisture without being too boggy. The soil should have good drainage without sucking all moisture out. Too much moisture can lead to bugs and fungi.

Finally, you need the right amount of light and humidity. There are different amounts of light that Kratom can thrive in, but generally, strong light is necessary. For humidity, the area should likely be between 70 and 80 percent humidity on average for the best growth. These conditions are not common in the United States but may be able to be replicated in large, outdoor greenhouses.
